The design of Yarraville Place is directly driven by context.
Retention and celebration of heritage elements act as a catalyst to sensitive materiality, resulting in an architecture that complements and enhances a hitherto neglected industrial precinct.
The development site contained several dilapidated factory buildings including a heritage bluestone factory constructed by the Melbourne Woolen Mills company and a number of brick buildings enclosing the bluestone walls.

Central to this unique masterplan is the retention of the bluestone walls of the existing dilapidated warehouse. The siting and offset geometry of this building within the site provides for unique interactions with the surrounding built form.
These spaces create unique pockets of character; some which create meandering pedestrianised pathways, others are shared zones for vehicle access and others which create more generous opportunities for planting landscape verges and pocket parks.

Key to the Yarraville Places’ urban design strategy and architectural expression is the idea of ‘neighbourhoods’ within the broader ‘village’ masterplan. Central themes to the housing within the development have been identified which manifest themselves differently within each house typology. Each block of house types is given its own identity whilst clearly being identified as part of the whole through shared elements.
The solidity of the existing walls also offers a counterpoint to the lightweight materials of the adjacent dwellings whilst brick is employed along Banool Street interface to reference the previous usage of the site with its red-brick industrial warehouses.
