Moxy weaves cultural history into every stay, inviting guests to explore its vibrant story
Moxy Melbourne celebrates its location by channelling the local energy and heritage of South Yarra into the design. With a radical approach to addressing the flood plain, Moxy is crafted with a transparent sealed-glass façade that provides a waterproof barrier and showcases the social activity inside.
Turning a Constraint into a Spectacle
Designing for a floodplain often results in a high, defensive concrete wall. Instead, we generated a dynamic, transparent solution on the small and narrow site. A laneway gently rises the full depth of the site to elevate the hotel entry above the floodplain and create a surprising and vibrant street interface, with universal access to the lobby. A sealed-glass façade made with swimming-pool glazing encases the lobby and podium and allows view down into the hotel bar and up into the lounge.
Channelling the Local Energy
Capturing the character of the area, the laneway provides semi-secret access to the hotel. The angular glazing and truss wall reference the old light industrial and workshop buildings in South Yarra. Inside, the rich, eclectic interiors weave Chapel Street’s vibrant energy and Moxy’s youthful attitude into a tapestry of texture, colour, art and imagery.
Creating a Vibrant Destination
The tower is sleek and restrained atop the highly crafted base, with rooms that are smart and compact, catering for a younger demographic. Food and beverage venues and inhabitable spaces are integrated throughout the ground plane to encourage sociability. The hotel bar and lounge are a new nighttime destination that amplifies Moxy’s presence and sense of place in South Yarra and invites hotel guests and local customers to interact.
