Eclectic, generous, and deeply human, Bank & Mollison is shaped by life and grounded in place
Bank & Mollison offers a vision for the future of Brisbane – one that gives back to the city through generous, locally attuned design. Its open ground plane invites public life, while the architecture and dwellings reflect the individuality, youthfulness and spirit of Brisbane’s eclectic West End community.
The Ground Plane at Play
Privately owned and publicly accessible, the landscaped ground plane rewilds the city and enhances the porosity, walkability and connectedness of the area. The L-shaped site embraces the existing corner cottage and offers an inviting shortcut for children — and locals — on their daily pilgrimage. Shaded beneath the undercroft, the informal landscape invites exploration, play and discovery while also channelling airflow throughout the site. Lateral cross-bracing extends like tree branches, and printed glass screens abstract the canopy, reinforcing the feeling of being immersed in a garden.
Designed from the Inside Out
Each dwelling has its own nuance and characteristics, shaped by where it sits in the building and the conditions to which it responds. The layouts consider orientation, sun, breeze and outlook, with sub-wings, corner glazing and deep cuts drawing in light, ventilation and greenery. Oblique views expand the sense of space and scale. This organicism of the plan reflects the individuality of how people live. This thinking carries through to the external awnings – a humble yet effective way for residents to manage light, shade and comfort. Practical and ornamental, they form a vibrant patchwork across the façade, expressing the character of each home and the personality of the community.
Spaces to Wander, Climb, and Connect
Connection, play and a laid-back rhythm are built into the architecture and landscape, creating spaces that support community and slow the pace of urban living. Two recreation decks are layered across the rooftops and linked by a steel gantry staircase and vertical green trellis. More than a means of access, this open-air connection encourages movement, casual encounters and everyday adventure. It becomes a place to walk, pause, hang out and interact with neighbours in the flow of daily life.
