Why should a flood plain control compromise the street interface?
Is there a way to open the flood barrier?
A hotel belongs both to the city and the street. How do we make the hotel local if we can’t meet the street?
The podium provides an innovative solution to the problem of the flood plain, reinventing the typical interface to Claremont Street. The design will engage with passing pedestrians as well as hotel users in a way unique to this particular place.
The tower is held aloft by a truss wall. The truss structure is planted and greened, a giant city sized trellis. This trellis provides a deep, visually rich interface between the adjacent residential building and the activity within the hotel lobby.
The entrance is via a new lane. The lane gently rises to allow entry into the hotel and residences above the flood plain. This arrangement allows for true universal access; hotel guest with suitcases, parents with prams, anyone.

The ornamental design of the eastern and western glass facade allows the tower to act as a lantern in the South Yarra skyline. A new stain glass window for the city.
The composition and detailing of the window humanises the interface between the guest rooms and the city outside.

The base of the hotel establishes a new innovative model for urban architecture in the city. The podium frame transfers the weight of the hotel tower to the outer boundary of the site, freeing the ground plane to allow for a rich ensemble of spatial experiences. The project establishes its own lane-way and sophisticated public thresholds, combines multiple levels of integrated public space, engages with the street in exciting and new ways, inviting guest to explore, discover and play.
