This week, we have welcomed the opportunity to reflect on the top ten highlights that have shaped our contribution to Sydney, as we celebrate our tenth anniversary since arriving in the city.

To look toward our future with purpose, it is important to understand the richness of our journey in Sydney so far. Continuing Rothelowman’s 30-year history of nationwide project design and delivery, we are proud to be creating solutions that enhance housing diversity in Sydney and deepen the connection between people and their built environment.

Here are our top ten highlights in the life of our studio from the last decade..

1. Our first Sydney studio
Our Sydney story started as a one-man band in Darlinghurst, where we officially opened our first studio. After rapidly growing in the first few weeks and evolving into a 44-person team, we outgrew the space and were ready to start a new chapter in Surry Hills.

2. First Christmas party
With lots to celebrate in December 2014, Rothelowman’s first Sydney Christmas party was a night to remember. Taking in spectacular views and enjoying even better company, the party was held at The Boathouse Balmoral.

3. First project
The first project submitted for Development Application (DA) approval was 7 Deane Street, Burwood. Designing our inaugural residential project in Sydney’s inner west was a significant and memorable milestone.

4. First built project
There is nothing quite as exciting as seeing your first project come to life. For the Sydney team, this was Lunar – an award-shortlisted apartment building known for its unique breezeways and generous communal amenities and landscaping.

5. First baby
Beyond the workplace, it was exciting to welcome Jenna Nitschke’s beautiful baby Theo to the world.

6. Welcoming Susanne Pini
Susanne injected vivacity into Rothelowman, further amplifying our focus on diversified work, fostering team collaboration, and strengthening our industry connections.

7. Our second Sydney home
We embraced the opportunity to design our very own studio in Surry Hills. Designing a space for ourselves meant thinking of the differing uses and personalities, and addressing those needs with an environment that promoted our design ethos.

8. Industry awards
In 2024, Lunar and Aire were submitted to the Australian Institute of Architects New South Wales Architecture Awards in the Residential Architecture – Multiple Housing category.

9. Longest standing employees
The experience, generosity, and outstanding design and documentation of Karl and Sam has shaped the culture of the Sydney team and inspire the national collective, with their exceptional dance moves and quick wit being widely known as their defining talents.

10. Next ten years
As experts in living, we are committed to the delivery of ideas and solutions that go beyond the conventional. Future-proofing our cities means having a deep understanding of how people want to live and knowing how to accommodate for the ever-changing needs of our population. We are both excited and determined to continue delivering commercially intelligent exceptionally designed architecture and interiors throughout Sydney, and nationwide.
