“A honeypot for humans”: The evolution of Brisbane’s West End

Over the last decade, Brisbane’s West End has evolved into a vibrant residential hub, emblematic of the potential architects and developers have when they embrace bold regeneration. Reflecting on this evolution, Rothelowman Associate Alex Burridge offers insights into the dynamic process of delivering and responding to the evolving needs of the 4101 community.

As you gaze out the window of the Rothelowman Brisbane studio, it’s humbling to see our designs standing proudly, residents bustling in and out, each immersed in their daily routines. The area is home to many families who live in a non-traditional way, breaking the mould of what it means to live like a “typical” Australian family in the free-standing dwelling enclosed by white picket fence.

By integrating Brisbane’s dynamic sub-tropical eco-system into our work, we acknowledge the human connection with the surrounding environment and invite public interaction at street level. Our designs seamlessly blend functionality, connectivity, and aesthetic appeal to shape spaces that enhance community, celebrate the local climate, and encourage exploration across the urban landscape.

We have created a series of vertical neighbourhoods that deepen resident connection, deliver publicly accessible private space, and work collaboratively with the climate to deliver comfortable and beautiful homes. The impact our firm has made on the 4101 postcode is unmistakable, and it continues to evolve each day.

Rothelowman’s current and future residential pipeline for West End and South Brisbane will support the anticipated increase of people living in apartments, which is currently 75 per cent in West End and 93 per cent in South Brisbane. Recent completions like Trellis, TreeHouse, and Enclave: Davies and Orleigh have solidified our presence, featuring designs that respond to the region’s climate.

By challenging design norms and boldly embracing urban renewal, we envision a continued evolution of West End and South Brisbane, driven by the dynamic interplay between people, space, and environment.
