The design of Newport continues the evolution of the Northshore Hamilton precinct and in particular, the eastern precinct, Hamilton Reach.
The ribbons of white, polished aluminium that define the length of the building have been directly referenced from the shape of the water nearby.
The site is located adjacent to a dense population of grey mangroves following an established waterway to the north-east. The design acknowledges this presence through interpretation and abstraction of a motif applied to various elements of the structure.
Located directly to the south of the site is the Brisbane River. The concept of fluidity and curve of water as it moves and reflects has given rise to the soft undulations of the façade forms.
Along the River’s edge, the building is created as a single, unbroken element in a horizontal expression reminiscent of the adjacent watercourse.
This “ribbon” effect to the building only becomes broken by the patterned precast of the mangrove in the same manner as the creek adjacent to the site.

The quiet, calming and enclosed qualities of the lobby, circulation spaces and communal facilities are derived from the unique ecosystem found in the intricate mesh of mangrove roots.
