Designing for Context: Sun-Drenched Corridors and Adaptable Protection

The ventilated and sun-drenched corridors offer residents the opportunity for casual neighbourly interactions whilst connecting them with the outdoors and offering them adaptable protection from weather conditions.

Embedded into a landscaped ground plane, the built form steps to follow the site’s topography, creating a massing that is born out of the unique context. The building’s simple, elegant gestures are timeless and offer an external backdrop for verdant planting and community activity.

The rhythmic playful façade serves to provide articulation and visual interest; framing views, creating privacy for balconies and providing scale and order. It also functions as a brise-soleil for west facing apartments, creating an overall building composition that has presence but also a lightness and depth in keeping with the local architectural vernacular.

The plans rationalizing principles are derived from the desire to achieve both responsiveness to street address, as well as creating opportunities for apartments to open to the long-distance views. By incorporating dual aspect apartments, we have been able to create a safer, more activated street edge and also offer residents northerly prospect views as far as the CBD and beyond.
