Babylon seeks to strengthen community and urban fabric by combining land and garden.
Establishing European inspired internal courtyards, Babylon seeks to strengthen community and urban fabric by combining land and garden to draw housing diversity, courtyards, and communal spaces through the centre of the development.
The building envelope relates to future scale and character of the locality but embraces novel perforated screening to soften the developments impact from the street and approaching vistas.

New typologies of terraces are introduced into the project as an innovative way of suburban living – developing below ground terraces that are sleeved under the mass to accommodate the slope of the site and urban edge terraces that sit along the northern edge of the site.
Verdantly planted courtyards gardens will assist with opening and closing to public and private areas, but also provide residents space to garden, relax or interact in small groups. Tranquil in character, this green band provides a peaceful sanctuary and a connection between living and the natural environment.

The Café and Sales Gallery captures Babylon’s concept through the purity of built form and lush vegetation that its namesake was famous for.
The palette throughout is crisp white, with the existing services exposed and ordered along the linear space. A long, glazed wall dominates the length of the space, allowing for all aspects of the uses within to draw on natural light, a diffuse effect cast on the monochromatic palette.

Arriving at the sweeping sculpture of the café area, where the baristas are put on display in the centre of the room, a large illuminated logo of the Babylon project frames the backdrop.
Below the Babylon icon, and sitting within the café serving area, is a weeping fig tree, selected as one of the groves of trees to be constructed on the future site. Patrons can enjoy being seated underneath the tree canopy, where the inside and outside are blurred to allow the character of the future development to be captured.
Along the one solid wall of the space, sculpted walls that directly speak to the architecture of the Babylon project, are rescaled and repurposed to create intimate seating spaces and form a sculptural backdrop to the entire space.

The stripped-back design approach leaves the ceiling exposed with minimal, artfully, placed lighting, allowing the space to maximise the natural light through the shop-front. The crowning piece of the café is the Baltic Whitestone finish of the café bench that runs continuously for seven metres.
All the details have been considered in the making of this space, with considerate scaling of the seating benches, and the custom-painted panels of the coffee machine to tie into the palette of the room. The execution of the curved wall panels is precise to the point of pedantry, but with the essence of the handmade being visible in the crafted benchwork.
