60-82 Johnson Street is located within the Department of Transport, Planning and Local Infrastructure’s Fisherman’s Bend Urban Renewal Area.
Situated south-west of the Melbourne’s CBD, the site is exposed to winds from several directions, the strongest of which comes from the north-west. It is also located in an area which traditionally draws its sense of identity from the river and the way its course carves around to the bay. These two natural characteristics of the site’s environment have led to the development of an architectural solution which embraces the challenges and erosive power of exposure to the elements, allowing it shape and form a design aesthetic.
These notations of exposure and erosion have influenced the built form in two ways; Hard singular elements, such as the two tall towers, will be highly legible in a citywide context and become rounded and curved, whilst maintaining their original elegance and purity. The softer grounded elements, relate more to a local sense of scale, such as the podium and low towers, and show the markings of strata erosion.

The heights of the tower forms are modulated to provide maximum visual separation. While the podium is heavily eroded and articulated so that it may relate to a more pedestrian sense of scale. These eroded setbacks in the podium create a terracing of external spaces and provide multiple levels of protected outdoor space for a wide range of the building occupants.
