Inspired by the great forecourts of Rome, the design acknowledges and respects the adjacent church and heritage precinct.
A complimentary street wall podium designed with enclosed masonry forms and punctured articulation consistent with the overall street character. The lofty entry statement is legible defining pedestrian access whilst opening up adjoining pedestrian views to the Church.
Inspired by the great forecourts of Rome, the design acknowledges and respects the adjacent church and heritage precinct through the boundary cloister which subtly curves away from the church. This peristyle is repetitious yet carefully crafted celebrating and framing the forecourt and enhancing the churches presence to the street.
The design provides a sensitive and polite enhancement to the church forecourt.
The building composition responds appropriately to surrounding interfaces through setbacks and recessive forms. Transitions occur at the rear from the low scale podium to set back upper levels. The mid-level is recessed, and uppermost level substantively concealed.

Architectural expressions at each level are classically restrained and complimentary to one another, yet diminishing in impact as the building rises. The podium is masonry and solid, providing a foundation. Upper levels are light, reflective and deeply articulated.
Like the podium, the upper levels facing the church appear to bend away from it due to diminishing mullion spacing, acknowledging the importance of the church to the precinct.
The eastern laneway is activated with a series of townhouses addressing the frontage. Landscape and pavement improvements, further lift the pedestrian experience, continuing Melbourne’s fascination with laneways.
The proposal is fully compliant with the overshadowing, visual bulk and over-looking guidelines. The Council urban designer has endorsed the design as ‘exemplar’ thus justifying the recessive height.
Pillar is contemporary, classic, timeless and additive to the Burwood Road character.
